Allow me to introduce you to the course

Urban Ink & Watercolours is my most technically ambitious course, and honestly, my favourite to teach. It’s got a steeper learning curve than the Core Skills courses, but that’s exactly the point. Get a feel for what’s waiting inside.

What You’ll Need

Here’s a simple kit that’ll see you through the whole course, nothing expensive, nothing you won’t use. If you have any questions after reading this list just email me: toby@sketchloose.co.uk

For the more advanced techniques in this course, 100% cotton 300gsm paper around A4 (12×9 inches) is recommended. A regular watercolour sketchbook is fine to start with, but upgrading your paper makes a real difference when you’re working with wet on wet techniques.

A range of fine liners from 0.1–0.8mm. For urban work you’ll want that variety, thin lines for detail, thicker for bold outlines. I personally will use my fountain pen throughout most of this course. For information on waterproof fountain pen safe inks check out the supplies link below.

Use what you have to start. But this is a good point to start exploring professional paints if you’re ready to — the difference in vibrancy and control is worth the investment when you’re tackling techniques like wet on wet.

Build a range — various round and flat brushes give you options. Aim for sizes up to a round 24 and a 1 inch flat. A water brush is handy if you’re sketching on location.

“Excellent varied course which taught me a lot and gave me confidence to have a go at anything. I will certainly be doing some more of your courses. Very enjoyable and confidence building.”

” have truly enjoyed this course. Every lesson had a new challenge. Can easily say every drawing was not perfect but I can say I learn so much from each of them. Thank you Toby. Onward and upward for me doing Sketch Loose.”

“Urban sketching has always felt just out of reach – too much to think about, too many rules. This course throws the rulebook out and hands you something better: confidence.”

Urban Ink & Watercolours is the course I wished existed when I started sketching cities. It’s challenging. It’s exciting. And once it clicks, you won’t be able to stop.
